How to read an Ausbildungsvertrag without getting lost

Most people open an apprenticeship agreement at the remuneration table. That instinct is understandable — and it often means they never calmly finish the training-content section. A better first pass treats the document like a map: locate the landmarks, then zoom.

Pass one: landmarks only

Skim for parties, occupation title, start date, duration, and Probezeit length. Write those five facts on a sticky note. If any of them is missing or contradictory across pages, stop and ask the training company before you debate overtime wording.

Pass two: training substance

Read how the contract points to the Ausbildungsordnung and any company training plan. Ask whether Berufsschule days are named or left flexible. Flexibility is not automatically unfair — but silence can surprise families who expected a fixed weekly pattern.

Pass three: money and time

Only now return to pay steps, hours, and leave. Compare year-one figures to what the company stated verbally. Note any “according to company policy” phrases that push detail into a handbook you have not seen.

Pass four: exits

Termination language during and after probation deserves a slow read. Highlight notice periods and any repayment or retention clauses. Unusual wording here is a common reason clients book our Ausbildungsvertrag Clarity lab.

Employment consultations in Germany: apprenticeship agreement guidance works best when you arrive with marked pages, not a blank stare at page one. A pencil is enough to start.
